THE
GLITTER OF GOLD
Part Three
The
surrounding country was very beautiful. Right below
the cabin was the river. There were a lot of pine trees.
And the place did not have any shortage of rattlesnakes.
One time I came within two or three feet of one. It
was a good thing that I had stopped. If I had kept on
going I would have stepped right on it. Because I did
not see it until I stopped walking. I believe that the
angel of the Lord was right there and stopped me. If
I would have gotten bit, I probably would have died
because we were so far away from town.
My
dad had a closer call then that. He was gold mining
up the river from Oroville. It was early in the morning.
He had his head down right by a boulder. He was digging
for gold. When he lifted his head , it was right at
the top of the boulder. Right there in front of his
face was a rattlesnake looking him in the eyes. Well
the only thing that saved him was that the rattlesnake
was cold. The rattlesnake was cold and it was trying
to get warmed up on the rock.
Well
my dad and his partner was waiting for the river to
go down. The river had to be low so they could mine
gold in the riverbed. Then something happened to my
dad and his partner, and they went separate ways. So
that ended our gold mining adventures.
I
remember what my dad said. That there is more gold in
them thar hills than what they ever took out. Gold mining
is like a disease. They always think that they are going
to strike it rich. There is more people that never found
gold than those that did.
My
dad's name was Bud Taylor. My dad passed away in 1963.
I remember my dad saying, that he was gold mining up
the river from Oroville, and he shot a deer out of season.
He changed his clothes and went to Oroville. The police
were looking for a murderer. Well, dad did not change
his tee shirt, and the blood came through his shirt.
Guess What? The police saw my dad walking down the street.
They thought that they had the murderer. They put him
in jail. They found out that the blood was deer blood.
Well, they got mad at my dad and he stayed in jail longer
then he should have. My dad is in heaven now. He has
found the biggest gold mine that ever has been found.
For where he is at now, walking on the streets of solid
gold, in that beautiful beaulah land.
